Pieces of Us is a documentary that focuses on the intimate and personal journeys of LGBTQ+ hate crime survivors, who by choosing to take their recovery public, inspire the survivor in all of us.

A brutal subway attack on their 10th anniversary, a date that ends in a near death choke hold, the loss of a child to suicide after school bullying, death threats from within your own community. The film examines the aftermath of the above hate crimes through the intersecting stories our survivors. A performance artist who is healing himself and others through the art of flag dance, the world’s first openly gay Indian prince who is changing the culture and laws of an entire country,  a top 5 Billboard artist/rapper and elementary school psychologist who through his words, music and counseling are teaching inclusivity to the next generation, and a mother who is the voice for her young son lost to suicide and speaks out for all LGBTQ children and youth. We reveal their deeply personal journeys from violence to triumph, and witness how creating a community by speaking your truth is one of the most powerful choices one can make.
The story culminates in NYC for World Pride and the 50th Anniversary of Stonewall where our participants join together in a celebration of love and a march for LGBTQ+ equality.

The film was selected for over 25 film festivals  including the prestigious Newport Beach Film Festival and SOHO International Film Festival. Pieces of Us is the recipient of the Jury Award for Best Film and the Artistic Achievement in Direction at the qFLIX Philadelphia Film Festival, Best Documentary Feature at the Fargo-Moorehead LGBTQ+ Film Festival, the Audience Favorite Award at the Cinema Diverse Palm Springs LGBTQ+ Film Festival and the Bent Sacramento LGBTQ+ Film Festival.  In addition to festival wins, the film received the Award of Excellence in Direction and LGBTQ Film at the Accolade Global Film Competition as well as the IndieFest Film Awards and received Award of Excellence at the Impact Doc Awards.

The use of archival footage including suffragettes, Anita Hill, Eleanor Roosevelt, Lady Bird Johnson, JFK and more helps support the modern day voices of women and men as the film weaves together a story of the ongoing fight for gender equality dating back 100+ years. Inspired by the national reckoning that occurred for women in the Fall of 2017, the film highlights prominent ministers, politicians, teachers, students, social workers and more as they discuss the #metoo movement, rape culture, the role of the church and initiatives taking place within the community and State to bring-forth change.
Grassroots change starts at the community level and while the film focuses on the Dallas, TX. area, the message is universal.

The documentary feature was the winner of seven awards including Best Director at the Southampton Int. Film Festival (UK) and accepted into 17 film festivals worldwide, Shatter the Silence is now available on Amazon Prime and Vimeo On-Demand.  Learn more about the film at www.shatterthesilencefilm.com and watch the Official Trailer below.
